Recently I had a client ask me this question. It surprised me because I see loving yourself as a key to a consciousness of abundance. From my perspective they are totally connected. But, I'd never taken it apart, so I welcomed the question. It began the following thought process which I expect will lead not only to more than more blog posts, but has also led me to offer a series of classes.
What is loving yourself?
Some simple answers to that are feeling good about yourself. Being understanding and compassionate with yourself no matter what is going on inside or outside yourself. In my work, I see that most of us treat ourselves worse than we would treat our worst enemy. We criticize, we judge, we constantly change the rules on ourselves, and often say harsh things. Certainly that is not loving ourselves, but I think in some twisted way we think it is. I cannot think we would heap the criticism and judgment upon ourselves that we do, unless we thought it was accomplishing some higher goal.
Oh, at this point if you are a reading this and you never judge, criticize, or second guess yourself, STOP reading this now. Unless of course you have a friend that you feel is very hard on themselves.
What does judgment and criticism achieve?
Why would we judge, criticize and doubt ourselves? Many might say it is the path to greater excellence, achievement and perfection. Some might say that judgment is the only way we'll "get it right."
What I've seen is that self-judgment, self criticism, the act of "trying to get it right" disconnects us from a greater strength and energy. Judgment and criticism are mental and analytical functions that actually interfere with the flow of life energy. Look at a finely tuned athlete. They can look at a film to see where they can improve. But if even for a millisecond they stop to think about what they are doing wrong in the actual process of performing their athletic feat is takes them off stride, out of sync, away from the relaxation and flow off their best performance. The pass receiver who takes his eye off the ball , the sprinter who tenses up because he thinks about his form, the ice skater who moves out of the flow for that fraction of a moment and lands off the edge all have something in common. Their need to get it right jumps in so strongly that in fact, they tense up and get it wrong. The move out of the flow or another way to say it is they move out of the present.
When we are loving ourselves we stay in the flow. When we stay in the flow we have access to that greater part of ourselves that can manifest magic.
When the joy is flowing, when things are going in a way that we judge to be "right" it's much easier to stay in a place of love and acceptance with ourselves. But, what about those times when we are sure it is "something" we did that's making life the way it is. And the way it is, is just NOT the way we want it to be? What about those times? How do we stay in loving with ourselves at those moments.
And how is all this connected to abundance?
The great abundance writers tell us one of the keys to having and manifesting what we desire it is be able to visualize what we want, what we desire, to feel it, hear it, smell it, taste it. The Law of Attraction works through the feelings -- and the higher feelings of love and joy. Self-judgment and criticism are not pathways to love and joy. The are pathways to anxiety, fear, stress and tension. The very feelings that interfere with manifesting our deepest desires; the very feelings that interfere with staying in a feeling of abundance.
Do you have criticism going on a lot of the time in the background? Thetahealing can find the sources of this and release it. We judge and criticize ourselves because we have beliefs that it will achieve something greater. IF we knew how to do better we would. Theta sessions can assist you to re-write the software within so that you have more praise than criticism, more love and joy, than judgement.
