The last quarter of 2008 is upon us. How are you doing with respect to the goals
for enhancing your business? How has
this year been for you? Are you on track
to win the gold medal this year? Silver? Bronze?
Or from this vantage point does it look like you are coming in way
behind medal territory.
There’s still a whole quarter of the 2008 business year race
to be completed. You can still get that
gold. Remember the women’s 4 x 400
race? The lead kept changing over the
race but when the final quarter began the United States was behind Russia.
Sanya Richards kept her focus and ran one of the best races of her life to win
the Gold. She was totally present in
that race, didn’t have mental talk distracting her from the job at hand. And she could have. She was expected to take individual gold and
didn’t. So, it would have been reasonable
for her to have all sorts of distracting talk about not making it in this race
either. The results show that was not
the case. In her interview she said that
“we all decided to come out here and win this.”
And win they did.
As a small business person since 1981 (with a small gap
running earthquake recovery projects at Cal State Northridge in 1994-1996) I know
just how fast things can turn around.
All it takes is one new major contact, or someone you’ve known to have a
new need for your services. Presto, chango your bottom line profit is in the gold medal category. And, it can turn around in the other direction
just that fast, too.
What makes the difference?
Some say it’s the economy. That
things are just going slower. They use
the “R” word. And yet, don’t you know
businesses that are thriving in this economy?
I do. Craig Valine, ace marketing
consultant, fellow Twitterite and Pasadena Chamber of Commerce member says, “We’re
in a mental recession. That is, many people believe we’re in a recession, so we
are. What I see it as is a change in market conditions – an opportunity to
change the way I do business and who I do business with.”
Craig is so right. If
we think we’re in a recession, we’ll be in a recession. How much of a role do our internal beliefs
play in the success of our own business?
Most of us know that our internal beliefs – success oriented or limiting
write the script of our reality.
What we don’t know is the source and extent of those
beliefs. While most of us have been
through a recession before, it was our parents and grandparents that went
through the great depression. But, we
have their DNA and genes. Beliefs can
be carried in the DNA and genes and thus we have those memories and today’s
economy is triggering those beliefs thus intensifying the “mental recession.”
So you do affirmations and think positively, and focus on new
customers and new ways to do business.
And if those pesky beliefs about lack and there not being enough are
tucked away in your subconscious they will continue to operate. What do I mean by continue to operate? Your beliefs are the programs or maps your
subconscious follows and if the memories of there not being enough – clients,
work, food, etc. are still there from ancestors that went through those very,
very hard times, then that will play a role in your success today. The current economic conditions as played up
by the media trigger those old beliefs.
Otherwise they might have just stayed dormant.
What to do about it?
Erase and replace. That’s what
