How ThetaHealing Saved my House for Me

It's a fine Sunday morning in Southern California. I say fine because there's a bit of a cloud cover that provides coolness in contrast to the heavy heat wave and 100 degree days we've been having. It's also quiet which I love.

It is rarely quiet around my wonderful little house because on one side of me is major construction -- 20 condos in the process of creation. On the other side is a tile place. So on one side is the hammering, concrete cutting, sawing, and constant beep beep of the all the things that have that reverse safety sound and on the other is the grinding of the cutting of ceramic tile. That goes on 6 days a week. Today is my day of quiet.

I credit ThetaHealing with allowing me to stay in my wonderful little house. I keep calling it wonderful because it's a California bungalow that was built in 1912. There's natural fir in the living room, and the feel of a cabin. I spent a lot of time stripping and oiling that wood when I moved in. One of Pasadena's historic oaks lean over the back yard from the screen shop next door making it shady and cooler in the heat of summer. Camphor trees line the street so it's shady in front, too. The neighborhood is safe. I've been here for a long time and I love it. The house just keeps getting re-invented to handle the different aspects of my life -- but that's another story.

The construction on the condos started around the middle of February and I thought I was going to go mad. In the then current iteration of my house I had my office in the dining room. I am also a photographer and spend a lot of time at my computer processing photos. Construction began with the demoliton of the three little houses (similar to mine) next door. The earth shook, and it sounded like the bulldozers were coming through the walls of my dining room as they crunched through walls and slammed major pieces of those little houses into ruble.  My two friendly, always out there with me cats, hid and would not come out. I'm a very auditory person, and I thought I was going to give in to permanent hysteria. I left the house, went to the mountains and began to hike. This was wonderfully calming, but didn’t get my work done. I took to working at night.

All this started, as I remember it, on a Monday. I was scheduled to take my second ThetaHealing Basic class on Friday. We had divided up into our first exercise and everyone was working with everyone else and I thought it was noisy so I said something to my instructor, Steve Parker. He listened and then explained that I needed to learn to do Theta anywhere and at any time. His explanation continued with the comment that Vianna said, "You should be able to do ThetaHealing on a battlefield." (Vianna is Vianna Stibal, founder of ThetaHealing and author of the book ThetaHealing which you can order from me or from Vianna's website www.thetahealing.com.) I went on to grumble about noise everywhere and especially about the construction. Steve, while he holds a firm line, is a compassionate and understanding teacher. He heard the distress underneath my grumbling.

"Would you like to be able to put that sound and the sound of the other people in here in the background and have just what you are focusing on be front and center?"

"Yes." I said firmly and excitedly? Of course, there was a question in my mind, too. Could that really happen with Theta? Would it work? Steve continued on asking my permission every step of the way. (In ThetaHealing nothing occurs without your permission, not one tiny little thing goes on without the permission of the client. That's stressed over and over and over again and I'll write more about it later.)

"Would you like to know that it's possible to put the sound in the background?"

    "Yes," I continued.

"Would you like to know that it's safe to put the sound in the background?"

    ”Yes."

"Would you like to know what it feels like and how to put the sound in the background?"

"Yes." I turned back to my partner, still skeptical that something this quick would work. To my surprise and delight, it did. I was still aware of the sounds around me, but they were indeed in the background. I could focus clearly on my partner without distraction. "But," I said to myself, "This may work here, the real test will be the construction." On Monday morning after the class came the major test. Caterpillars and bulldozers were vying with each other to see who could be the loudest, and yet, I could work. The sounds were in the background. I could focus and still be in my house. I might add that I could also see changes that would make my house more workable in the coming months of the construction. This construction has turned out to have many gifts which I will write about in future blog posts.
